Gokarna 5 Beach Trek

A clifftop walk that links five beaches — Kudle, Om, Half Moon, Paradise and Belekan — through forest, rock and open sand. This is the route, the distance, the difficulty and everything to know before you start.

Distance: 6–8 km Time: 4–6 hours Difficulty: Easy–moderate Best: October–March

Overview

What is the Gokarna Beach Trek?

The Gokarna beach trek is a one-way coastal walk between the town's beaches, following laterite and granite cliffs from Kudle Beach south to Belekan. Along the way it passes Om, Half Moon and Paradise — the five beaches that give the route its name.

There is no single marked trail. Instead, a network of walker-made paths climbs each headland and drops to the next cove. Some sections run through casuarina shade and coconut groves; others cross open rock where you will want both hands and grippy footwear. The reward is a chain of beaches that no road connects, each one wilder than the last.

It is a day walk, not an expedition. Most people start after breakfast, swim at two or three coves, eat at a shack on Om or Half Moon and finish at Belekan by mid-afternoon. If you want the fuller picture of each beach, see the beaches guide.

Plan around the tide. The rocky sections between Om and Half Moon and around Paradise are easiest near low tide. Check a tide table the night before, and never let a rising tide push you onto a boulder traverse you cannot reverse.

The route

5 beach route, leg by leg

The order below is the classic direction. Distances and times are approximate and assume a steady, unhurried pace.

  1. Kudle Beach Start · from town 1.5–2 km

Begin on the wide golden crescent of Kudle, 20–30 minutes on foot from Gokarna town or a short auto ride. Fill your water bottles here. The path south leaves from the far end of the beach and climbs the headland toward Om.

  2. Om Beach Kudle → Om · ~2–2.5 km · 40–60 min

The most set-up beach on the route, shaped like the ॐ symbol with two crescents. Shacks, cafés and watersports occupy the main stretch. Refill water, eat if you like, then follow the path around the southern headland toward Half Moon.

  3. Half Moon Beach Om → Half Moon · ~1.5 km · 30–45 min

A quiet crescent with no permanent shops and little phone signal. There are seasonal shacks in peak season. The scramble around the rocks here is the most technical part of the walk — take it slowly, especially with a pack.

  4. Paradise Beach Half Moon → Paradise · ~1–1.5 km · 25–40 min

Also called Full Moon Beach, Paradise is the wild one — tent camps from October to March and no real infrastructure. The boulder traverse from Half Moon is short but exposed; a boat from Om (about ₹300) is the easy alternative.

  5. Belekan Beach Paradise → Belekan · ~1.5–2 km · 40–60 min

The quiet northern end of the chain and the usual finish. From Belekan, walk up to the coastal road for an auto back to Gokarna, or arrange a boat pickup. Confirm road access locally, as sections can be rough in the monsoon months.

Trek cost: what you actually pay

The walk itself is free — there is no entry fee and no permit for the beaches. What you spend depends on how you do it:

  • Self-guided: ₹0 for the route. Budget for water, food and your return (auto or boat).
  • Boat shortcuts: ₹150–₹300 per person for the Om–Half Moon or Om–Paradise legs.
  • Return auto from Belekan: agree on the fare before you ride; rates vary with season and road access.
  • Local guides: rates vary by group size and season. Ask your homestay or a local operator for a current quote rather than trusting old listings.
  • Food and drink: shacks on Kudle, Om and seasonal Half Moon serve meals; budget ₹300–₹600 for the day.

Coastal Trails publishes guide information, not fixed trek prices. Verify all rates with the operator on the day.

Included and excluded

If you book a guided trek through a local operator, this is what is typically covered and what is not — confirm the details with your operator before paying.

Usually included

  • A local guide who knows the tide windows and exits
  • Route briefing and safety instructions
  • Sometimes breakfast or a shack lunch
  • Sometimes the boat transfer back to Om or Gokarna

Usually excluded

  • Water, snacks and meals unless stated
  • Boat rides and return transport
  • Personal gear, sunscreen and first aid
  • Travel insurance

What to carry

  • Water: 2–3 litres per person, plus electrolytes if it is hot.
  • Footwear: grippy sandals or trainers that can get wet and handle rock. Flip-flops are a bad idea on the traverses.
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses and reef-safe sunscreen. Much of the route is exposed.
  • Clothing: quick-dry clothes and a swimsuit if you plan to swim.
  • Cash: no ATMs south of town and patchy signal means no reliable UPI — carry small notes.
  • Power bank and dry bag: signal is weak between Om and Belekan; keep your phone dry.
  • Basic first aid: antiseptic, blister plasters and any personal medication.

Safety

  • There are no lifeguards anywhere on the route. Swim where locals swim, and never alone.
  • Currents are strong at Main Beach and can surprise you in the wilder coves. Do not swim near rocks in swell.
  • Rock can be slick after rain or spray. Test footholds on the Half Moon and Paradise traverses.
  • Start early, carry more water than you think you need, and avoid the walk after dark.
  • In monsoon, expect leeches on the forest sections and avoid the rocky traverses entirely.
  • Tell someone your plan and expected finish time. Signal is unreliable on the southern half.

How to return

From Belekan, walk up to the coastal road and take an auto-rickshaw back to Gokarna town or your stay. From Paradise or Half Moon, local boat operators run rides to Om Beach or town for roughly ₹150–₹300 per person, subject to sea conditions. Many walkers arrange a pickup in advance through their homestay, which avoids depending on what happens to be at the road when they finish.
